BREAKING NEWS: In early 2008, Mark Wood was elected to serve on the board of the prestigious and forward-thinking American String Teachers Association (ASTA), where he will have the opportunity to affect the future of progressive string education in our country on a truly grand scale! Congratulations Mark on this fantastic achievement! Imagine a student who walks from a world of fast-paced, in-your-face experiences into a quiet school music room, where they are presented with the prospect of dryly studying music. Is it any wonder that they're not enthusiastic? Now imagine the same child hurrying through the school hall to get to the same classroom, because they're actually EXCITED about being there. By empowering teachers, we've actually accomplished this with thousands of schoolkids throughout the country. Their school music experience has been transformed. Here's just a few things they had to say:
"It was even more incredible than I can ever put into words. But to sum it all up… Intoxicating… Infectious… Inspiring…" And the teachers' responses have been equally telling: "I have never seen the kids SO extremely excited about playing their violins before!! They are STILL bouncing off the walls!!" "If you are a string teacher you NEED to do this!!! It has opened my eyes to so many possibilities! It also has shown me a different way to go about teaching music..." "I just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate all that you have done for our program here - having you come to Moorhead has had a lasting legacy on all of us - the kids and parents and community still talk about our sold out concert last year at the Fargo Civic Center - our local paper is running a story about our innovative programming - and that is a direct result of having you here." "You've made a huge difference in the students' lives and in the way our community views music education." And the parents: “I played violin for six years when I was young. If I had ever been involved in a program like yours, I would never have stopped playing!! My son is a third grader who was in the show. He was ready to give up the violin--not anymore! Thank you so much for sparking my son's interest in something other than video games and sports!” All of this was accomplished through the "Electrify your strings!" program, and it's happening in more and more schools every year. We form a partnership, with teachers, to create a unique experience for students that is positively transformative.
